What are the Advantages of Dams – Imaluop

Hi, everyone, welcome to imaluop.com now we will discuss the major advantages of dams. We often hear about hydroelectric energy which is a utilisation of water energy for electricity production.

But we don’t know that there are many advantages of dams which most of us don’t know about. A dam requires a lot of money to build it and maintain it. So it should be designed in a manner so that it can be used for different purposes.

And as it requires so much money it builds in such a way that it lasts for a long time.  Now we are going to learn about those extra facilities which we get from a dam besides production of electricity.

Water stored in a dam can be used in industrial purposes, agriculture irrigation or can be used for domestic purposes. Now we will discuss the use of dams for different purposes one by one below.

Advantages of Dams in Domestic Purpose:

When water flow in an area is very much water stored in dams for future use. Extra water in dams generally can be used for different domestic purposes like cooking, bathing, cleaning different materials for household purposes, washing.

Filtered dam water used as drinking water which reduce the stress on  other water source. In house the purpose where filtered water is not required like in gardening a lot of water is used. Dam water can meet this water requirements in gardening.

Advantages of Dams in Agriculture:

Most of the time agriculture is affected in a bad way due to water shortage. Because agriculture require a lot amount of water for different purposes like irrigation. If the excess water in dams can reach to agriculture area then it would be very helpful for farmers. The incidents of low yield for water shortage can be eradicated easily.

Dams can be Used as Recreational Areas:

Many dams become tourist spots which is another major advantage of dams. People can enjoy it in different ways in a dam area. For example fishing, boating and natural beauty attract people in a dam area. This gives a positive return in the economy because a lot of resources are used for designing and maintenance of a dam.

Dams Protect Us Against Flood:

During the rainy season most of the time rivers lose the capacity to hold the extra water which can result in flood. But dams extend the capacity of a river and hold the extra water for future use.

But if dams are not maintained in a proper way it can result in sudden flood in dams areas. When water availability is not sufficient in that area then the stored water in the dam can be used for different purposes.

Production of Hydroelectric Power:

Electricity is a necessary element in our daily life. It is true that we can generate electricity in other ways also without using water energy. But we should utilise all the resources to gain electricity to meet huge demand for electricity.

Water stored in a dam also stores potential energy. When we release the stored water the potential energy stored is used to produce hydroelectric energy. The electricity we get from the water falls in a dam is at a constant rate.

The electric energy production can be controlled easily by opening and closing the sluice gate of the dam. When we do not need further electricity we can easily close the sluice gate of the dam and open again when we need electricity further.

But here we get extra facilities in production of hydroelectric power. Because other methods of electricity production like thermal power plants release some by-products which can cause pollution in nature.

But in hydroelectric power we can produce electricity without causing natural pollution.
