What is Organic Farming ?

In agriculture for better growth of crops farmers use some chemicals like fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides. They give plant nutrition, give protection against various damaging factors like pests, weeds but alongwith they cause damage to the environment in various ways.

We can reduce the damage in the environment using eco-friendly technology to grow the crops plants. In organic farming we raise the crops without using environment damaging chemicals like inorganic fertilizers, weedicides, pesticides.

We can get a high yield as well as a healthy ecosystem by using organic farming methods. People are becoming aware about the harmful effects on our environment of agricultural chemicals.

Different Types of Organic Farming:

Depending upon the technique we use in organic farming we can divide the organic farming in two types.

Pure Organic Farming:

In pure organic farming crops grow using completely natural resources without using any chemical fertilizers or any other harmful chemicals. Fertilizers for nutrition, pesticides for pest control are obtained from natural alternatives sources.

Integrated Organic Farming:

In interested organic farming we focus on raising the crops without damaging the environment implementing integrated pest management and nutrients management.

Major Advantages of Organic Farming:

  1. As we do not use harmful chemicals fertilizers, pesticides and other chemicals we can save our biodiversity and maintain soil fertility.
  2. Organic farming techniques prevent soil erosion and crop failure.
  3. We can save a lot of economic resources because it can be run on renewable energy sources.
  4. Toxic chemicals used in agriculture flashes with the rain water flow and reach in water bodies and surrounding areas and cause water and soil pollution. Organic farming prevents pollution because it does not use that harmful chemicals to increase the yield.
  5. Organic farming can give us a healthy lifestyle because the chemicals used in agriculture more or less damage our living cells also. But organic farming removes harmful chemicals which most of the time prove to be very harmful.
  6. Some chemicals used in agriculture damage the balance in the physical and chemical composition of the soil but organic farming can save the physical and chemical properties of the soil.
  7. Finally we say that organic farming is better for the environment and the health of those animals who take plants as food including humans.

Disease Management in Organic Farming:

In organic farming we avoid using harmful chemicals but we also think about the disease in crops which can slow down the yield. Naturally there are some useful microorganisms in soils which can check the growth of other harmful microorganisms.

To avoid plant disease we should practice crop rotation and provide proper supply of micronutrients and macronutrients.

Weeds and Pests Management in Organic Farming:

To control weeds we should not use weedicides when it is under control. Manual weeding using hand is very useful in organic farming. For controlling the pests we should prefer natural preventive methods and organic pesticides like Neem pesticides. Crop rotation, mixed crops are recommended methods for controlling the weeds and pests in the crop field.

Nutrients Management in Organic Farming:

In organic farming we do not use chemical fertilizers instead of this we should use composted organic manure, bacterial biofertilizers, fungal biofertilizers to improve the fertility of the soil.
