Biosafety and its Level – Imaluop

Now we are going to discuss a very important topic in our everyday life, biosafety and its level along with Importance of biosafety.

What is Biosafety:

Biosafety is a different approach to minimise the harmful effects in human beings and in the environment due to any factors and we adopt various principles and procedures as a safeguard for human population.

It is a set of strategies and principles which prevents exposure to pathogens and toxins. Biosafety is some strategies to restrict different types of harmful biological agents, radiation and different chemical toxins and it can be done with the help of biotechnology.

We can only get best results when people will be more aware about the different regulations, strategies to make it more effective. And we should try to implement different biosafety from the beginning and especially for those who are directly connected to the research so that it can be implemented from the beginning.

Different multinational efforts are going on to ensure the proper implementation of biosafety strategies in every step. For the better transport of genetically modified organisms the principles should be spread throughout the world for better implementation.

Importance of Biosafety Issues:

We develop different genetically modified organisms but it does not become so fruitful so we should be aware about the results of the research in this field and always need to be approved by the specific authorisation body.

If awareness is much enough in researchers in the field of genetic engineering then we can minimise the risk of biosafety. Genetic engineering and its products are very useful for our exponentially growing population but we should not hurry, we should use the knowledge of genetic engineering wisely.

Different levels of biosafety is used for the research in different microorganisms and the level depends upon how dangerous the microorganisms are for our earth.

Different Levels of Biosafety:

Biosafety Level 1:

It is used for those microorganisms where risks are nearly zero for example non pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli. As they have low risk so they generally do not depart from the main building and easily we can perform research on them in benches without any special equipment. Only general equipment, lab coat, gloves, goggles sufficient and other facilities like mechanical pipetting, safe handling are available in biosafety level 1.

Biosafety Level 2:

This level is applied for those microorganisms who can cause various diseases in human beings like HIV, encephalitis virus and here we should take various precautions to avoid any types of infection.

Researchers should be aware about the previous cut and should use different types of preventive equipment like gloves, goggles, face shield to avoid any types of infection and more on any procedure which can cause infection should be performed in a biosafety cabinet.

Biosafety Level 3:

This is set for those microorganisms which can infect humans through air or inhalation like Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Here we should perform all research in the biosafety cabinet and we should use respirator equipment to prevent air borne infection.

If the strain is much dangerous then they should be separated from the main building and should be immunised against the specific pathogen and medical surveillance is must.

Biosafety Level 4:

This special level of biosafety is used for those microbes which cause very dangerous fatal diseases in humans like Ebola virus. This is very dangerous because in those cases the diseases are not curable and there are no methods for immunisation so very much care should be taken in those cases.

During research on those microorganisms researchers must decontaminate everything they use for research and they perform all activities in class III biosafety cabinets and shower properly before leaving the laboratory.
