Hi, today we are going to discuss a special type of animal husbandry apiculture and its benefits. Nowadays our population is growing at a very high rate and to meet various requirements for our population we should utilise all of our natural resources in a scientific way to cope with the high demand for the growing population.
Apiculture is also an effort to utilise our natural resources in a scientific way to get different types of items for human welfare. Bees are social insects like ants who work hard for their living but we can get economic benefits from them if we manage them scientifically.

What is Apiculture:
The world ‘Apiculture’ gives us its meaning because the Latin term ‘apis’ means bees so apiculture means culture of bees but in a proper way. Bees are famous for collecting nectar from different flowers and the honey is a source of human food which is rich in different minerals, vitamins and other essential nutrients. Honey is also used to cure different diseases traditionally for this reason demand for honey is very high even in present days.
Apiculture is a large-scale rearing and management of honey bees in a scientific way to get honey and wax to get economic benefits. Apiculture is done in an area where honeybee are easily available like nearby any flower fields where honeybee come to collect the flower nectar. Beekeepers use artificial man made beehives to rear and manage honey bees in apiaries to get honey and wax.
Benefits of Apiculture:
We have already discussed some benefits of apiculture but we will discuss some more benefits of apiculture which will open your mind in a new dimension about apiculture.
Honey:
If we talk about the main economic advantages of apiculture then we should talk about honey. Honey has a great nutritional value because it has almost all very important minerals and vitamins as well as it is used in different purposes like energy drinks. For this reason honey has great economic value so we can say it is one of the main benefits of apiculture.
Wax:
We can get wax from other sources but the wax present in bee hives which is secreted by honeybees have a special quality. The wax obtained from apiculture is used in different industries like cosmetics industry, pharmaceutical industry so bee wax also has great economic importance.
Help in Pollination:
Honeybees take part in pollinating flowers and in return they get nectar as rewards so they are helpful for fertilization. So apiculture practices nearby agricultural crops help in pollination and it increases the yield of crops.
Used in HIV:
Bee venom contains a special protein which is useful to trigger prophylactic reaction in HIV patients so apiculture is also beneficial for HIV patients.
Different Varieties of Honeybees:
Proper selection of honeybees can give very high demand so beekeepers always rear those varieties which are more beneficial economically for them and we will discuss some major varieties of honeybees.
Apis Indica :
It is the most common indian variety of honeybees which is very easy to rear and its yield is around 3 kilograms per colony per annum.
Apis Dorsata :
It is known for its high yield, producing around 40 kilograms of honey per colony per annum, is a giant bee and also known as rock bee.
Apis Mellifera :
It is popular for its high yield so they are cultured most frequently by beekeepers and one another benefit is they sting very less so it is very easy to collect honey from this variety.
Apis Florea :
They are known as little bees for their small size and they do not sting easily so honey extraction from this variety is very easy but yield is very less around 1 kilograms per annum per colony.
