Hi, we will now discuss antimicrobial resistance causes which will give you a basic idea about antimicrobial resistance and its causes along with examples of antimicrobial resistance.
Table of Contents
What is Antimicrobial Resistance:
Sometimes we observe that some microorganisms keep growing after the use of antimicrobial agents and they spread to other people. This is due to antimicrobial resistance of the microorganisms which makes them able to grow even in the presence of antimicrobial agents.
Some microorganisms develop resistance against some antimicrobial agents and the microorganisms who can resist antimicrobial agents are known as superbug. Due to various reasons different microorganisms become antimicrobial resistant and spread the infection to other healthy people.
Antimicrobial Resistance Causes:
Sometimes we use antibiotics when it is not necessary to restrict the growth of harmful microorganisms. But do you know what happens when we use antibiotics over a certain limit, the microorganisms who can resist the effect of antibiotics only live and other microorganisms who do not tolerate the antibiotics effect become extinct.
So it causes growth of more antibiotics tolerating microorganisms and over time all the microorganisms become antibiotics resistant when antibiotics lose their efficiency.
So we do not get satisfactory results when we use antibiotics for the microorganism who developed antimicrobial resistance but there are many other reasons for antimicrobial resistance in microorganisms which we have discussed below.
Social Causes:
Sometimes we use antimicrobial agents in such a manner which makes the microorganisms able to tolerate the effect of antimicrobial agents.
High Dose of Antimicrobial Agent:
When we suffer from a serious infection we use antimicrobial agents in very high doses to check the growth of microorganisms but sometimes it causes antimicrobial tolerance in those microorganisms.
Antimicrobial Agents Incomplete Use:
Sometimes we take antimicrobial medicine but when we feel better we do not take more medicine so we do not complete the full dose of antimicrobial medicine. The symptoms reduced so we think that we recovered completely but due to incomplete doses most of the microorganisms keep growing in our body and they develop tolerance against antimicrobial medicine.
Agriculture Use:
There are a very large number of antimicrobial resistant microorganisms present in crop fields which can contaminate water bodies and from there they can infect other animals.
Biological Causes of Antimicrobial Resistance:
Sometimes antimicrobial resistance develops in different microorganisms naturally due to various biological phenomena which we will discuss below.
Mutation in Microorganisms:
Mutation is a common event in reproduction and it occurs randomly, sometimes it becomes beneficial for the organism while some mutation makes them extinct.
Microorganisms grow and divide at a very fast rate in our body and during their division different types of mutation occur in them but some mutation occurs in them suddenly which makes them resistant against antimicrobial agents.
Selective Pressure:
In a microorganisms population some microorganisms present who can tolerate antimicrobial resistance but most of them do not tolerate antimicrobial resistance. But when antimicrobial agents are introduced in the microorganisms population most of the microorganisms die due to the effect of antimicrobial agents but some microorganisms who can tolerate the antimicrobial resistance remain alive.
So with the time antimicrobial resistant microorganisms become dominant in microorganisms population and it is due to selective pressure and a reason for antimicrobial resistance.
Gene Transfer:
When the genome of antimicrobial resistant microorganisms transfer to the microphone, who can not tolerate antimicrobial agents, become antimicrobial resistant due to the presence of antimicrobial resistance genes in them.
So we should use antimicrobial agents properly after consulting our doctors because improper use is the main reason for antimicrobial resistance which reduces the efficiency of antimicrobial agents.
Otherwise simple disease caused by microorganisms will become very dangerous because antimicrobial agents will not be able to check the growth of microorganisms effectively.
