Hi, now we are going to discuss androgen hormones functions and general overview of androgen hormones which is very important in males. Androgen is a special group of hormones which is required to express different activities in males and their behaviour.
Table of Contents
What is Androgen Hormones:
Androgen is a group of hormones which is responsible for development of male reproductive organs and characters in males which is secreted from interstitial cells of the testis. Naturally it is produced by the interstitial cells present between the seminiferous tubules in testis but it is also available in synthetic form.
But it is not true that androgen is only present in males, it is present in females also because some female organs and structures also produce androgen. In females, ovaries also produce androgen in very small amounts, fat cells and adrenal cortex also produce androgen in females in small amounts.
Androgen Hormones Functions:
To maintain the best functions of male reproductive system, bone, muscle we need the optimum level of androgen in blood but the level keeps fluctuating in various conditions. When they need to become more functional the level of androgen in blood becomes high but if the level becomes much higher in blood then their production is inhibited by various feedback mechanisms which are specific for each endocrine secretion.
Various Secondary characters observed in males is due to function of androgen hormones like hair in pubic region, hair growth in underarm, muscular body during puberty. Development of male reproductive system in males is also due to the results of androgen hormone functions.
Androgen not only works on the reproductive system but it also regulates the function of the kidney, liver, bone and muscle. Androgen is responsible for the desire of males for females and it also helps to maintain strong bone because it has a great role in maintaining bone density.
There are many different other functions of androgen in the human body which we will discuss more one by one below.
Androgen stimulates anabolic pathway in protein and carbohydrates metabolism, androgen promotes the production of sperm in seminiferous tubules which is very important for reproduction.
The specific types of changes in behaviour in male is due to action of androgen on our central nervous system. At time of puberty humans grow at a faster rate because during puberty androgen stimulates the secretion of growth hormone which is responsible for growth in humans.
Different behavioural and physical changes occur in males during puberty like aggressiveness, growth of facial hair, low pitch voice, muscular body is due to action of androgen hormones.
Development, proper functioning and growth of different accessory reproductive organs like vas deferens, prostate gland, seminal vesicles, urethra, epididymis in human male is due to the activities of androgen.
Recent research shows that androgen also has a great impact on our moods, it affects different types of metabolism in various ways, androgen also regulates bone density and affects the cardiovascular system.
Androgen Hormones Levels in Blood:
We will discuss different reasons which change the hormonal level in our blood below.
Side effects of some medicine alter the hormonal level in blood, HIV can be a reason for fluctuations of hormonal level in blood, chemotherapy, adrenal Insufficiency, hypopituitarism, ovarian insufficiency can cause imbalance of hormonal level in blood.
Symptoms of High Level of Androgen:
Acne, lack of ovulation, unexpected absence of period, irregular periods, infertility, excess hair growth specially facial hair may be an indication for increasing or high levels of androgen.
Symptoms of Low Level of Androgen:
Different symptoms like depression, osteoporosis in women, unexpected mood changes, loss of body hair, enlargement in breast area, lethargy, fatigue, very small amount of ejaculation, hot flushes, frequent sweating, weakness in muscle, weakness in ejaculation, excess storage of fat in abdominal region, reduction of muscle mass may indicate about low level of androgen in blood.
