Hi, now we boost our concept of a general study about adrenocorticotropic hormone. Before we talk more about this hormone we should know some basic information about adrenocorticotropic hormone. Do you from where the adrenocorticotropic hormone secretion occurs, anterior pituitary secrete adrenocorticotropic hormone.
You should know that it has some other names also like adrenocorticotropin, serum adrenocorticotropic hormone or corticotropin, arginine vasopressin. In our adrenal glands cortex region secretion is highly regulated by adrenocorticotropic hormone. Stress hormone cortisol is under the control of master gland secretion adrenocorticotropin. Not only cortisol it also regulates steroids hormone levels to some extent.

Control of Adrenocorticotropic Hormone Secretion:
In our anterior pituitary basophilic cells are responsible for production of adrenocorticotropic hormone. After its production it goes to its target organs adrenal cortex via blood flow and stimulates the adrenal cortex to secrete cortisol. Hypothalamus secrete corticotropin releasing hormone which stimulates our anterior pituitary for adrenocorticotropic hormone production.
If Adrenocorticotropic Hormone level in blood increases more than its requirements a negative feedback trigger by cortisol hormone level. Secretion of Adrenocorticotropic Hormone varies with different times of a day. In the morning when we wake up our Adrenocorticotropic Hormone level becomes very high and decreases with time. At night when we go to sleep its level becomes minimum in blood. So we can say that Adrenocorticotropic Hormone has a diurnal rhythm.
Optimum Level of Adrenocorticotropic Hormone:
Like other endocrine glands secretion our body performs best at a certain level of Adrenocorticotropic Hormone. Now what is the best level of Adrenocorticotropic Hormone for our adrenal gland. If we can find that our blood adrenocorticotropin level is 6.0 to 76 pg/ml or 1.3 to 16.7 pmol/L then it is okay.
High Level of Adrenocorticotropic Hormone:
Due to some reason when our blood adrenocorticotropin level becomes very high we suffer from Addison disease. There may be many reasons like hyperactivity of pituitary gland, abnormal response of adrenal glands receptors which stimulates hypersecretion of adrenocorticotropic.
If we take very stress then also secretion of adrenocorticotropic increase which is not good for our health and this stress may be physical or psychological. If we notice acne, excess body hair, excess fat in the shoulder region, weakness in muscle, abnormal weight gain, frequent fatigue, pinkish mark on abdomen or in thigh region it may result in increased secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone.
Low Level of Adrenocorticotropic Hormone:
Due to hypopituitarism secretion of anterior pituitary decrease and as a result secretion of adrenocorticotropic may decrease. Sometimes surgery in the pituitary gland may cause hyposecretion of the pituitary which causes low levels of Adrenocorticotropic Hormone. We suffer from Cushing’s syndrome when levels of Adrenocorticotropic Hormone become low in our blood. A reduced level of Adrenocorticotropic Hormone may result various abnormalities like – weight lose, hypoglycemia, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, pain in abdomen, hyperpigmentation, weakness in muscle, irregular menstrual cycle in women, fatigue, low blood pressure, pain in joints, pain in muscle.
Reason for Abnormal Blood Adrenocorticotropic Hormone Level:
There may be various reasons why our Adrenocorticotropic Hormone Level in our blood become abnormal. If a tumor is present in the adrenal gland then it must affect the blood adrenocorticotropin level. Hyperplasia in the adrenal also results in abnormal adrenocorticotropin levels in our body.
Cortisol levels also influence adrenocorticotropin levels via a feedback mechanism in our body. If a tumor is present in our pituitary gland then it causes abnormal blood adrenocorticotropin level. Adrenal glands bleeding, radiation therapy side effects also influence blood adrenocorticotropin level.
Function of Adrenocorticotropic Hormone:
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone regulates various metabolism in our body, like glucose metabolism, bone resorption, lipolysis, protein metabolism, spermatogenesis regulation in men are the major function of Adrenocorticotropic Hormone.
